Raining on your parade? That’s not possible in the Townsville region. Thanks to our beautiful tropical but overly dry climate, Townsville experiences over 300 days of sunshine a year. However, as we all know, it must rain sometime and luckily, Townsville hosts a wealth of experiences, activities, and fun things to do to keep yourself (and your little ones!) entertained during wet weather.

You don’t need sunny weather to enjoy Townsville’s delicious food and drink.

That’s one good thing about eating and drinking in Townsville, it can be enjoyed rain or shine. Another good thing? The food is delicious and the drinks are refreshing. From A Touch of Salt in Townsville City to Café Nourish on Magnetic Island, Cloakey’s in Long Pocket and JK’s Delicatessen in Ingham, you won’t be going hungry or thirsty in the Townsville region regardless of any wet weather.

Get your culture fix – Townsville museums are the perfect rainy-day activity.

You’re already aware of Townsville’s flourishing culture scene, so make this rainy day in Townsville your chance to experience it up close. With the Townsville Museum and Historical Society, Queensland Museum Tropics, and the Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts at your fingertips, escape the wet weather with an afternoon spent immersing yourself in art and history.

Have young ones you want to keep entertained indoors? The Queensland Museum Tropics is a kid approved crowd favourite. Start in the Enchanted Rainforest space, where children (and adults!) can learn about North Queensland’s ancient tropical rainforest before jumping across to the Pandora Gallery, which takes you through marine life and the history of a shipwreck. You won’t hear a single ‘I’m boooooored’ from your kids.

Shop ‘til you drop!

Just how you don’t need sunny weather to enjoy Townsville’s delicious food and drink, the same goes for our vibrant shopping scene. Indulge in a little bit of retail therapy at Velocity 21 in Townsville city centre, the many boutiques along Flinders Street and Gregory Street, and Goldtower Central in Charters Towers.

Get your Zen on.

There’s a reason why the sound of rain is used in so many wellness retreats, it’s incredibly relaxing. Make your own health and wellness retreat at your home or hotel, by closing your

eyes and relaxing to the sound of the rain. Or if you’d rather the professionals did the work for you, head to City Cave Float & Wellness Centre, which offers a range of float therapy, infrared sauna and massage services to choose from.

Go on, treat yourself, you deserve it!

Embrace the wet weather at a waterpark!

You’ll be getting wet anyway!

If there is no lightning or heavy rain and it is safe to do so, spend a drizzly afternoon at the Burdekin Aquatic Centre. Located in Ayr, the Burdekin Aquatic Centre boasts an incredible water park, with 3 large slides, water sprayers and big bucket making it another popular rainy day kid choice.

Enjoy indoor entertainment.

If you’d much prefer to stay indoors during wet weather in Townsville, you’ll want to head to Cannon Park. Cannon Park is a lifestyle centre and is home to a six-screen cinema, kingpin bowling and laser tag, as well as many cafes and restaurants. Regardless of if the rain is here for a day or for a week, you’ll keep yourself and your family entertained working your way through the new release movies, challenging each other to a ten pin or laser tag matches, and enjoying the many different food options on offer.

And once the rain subsides – check out the waterfalls!

This one may be best left until the rainy weather has left, but the brilliant thing about rain in the Townsville region is it means our waterfalls thrive. Popular spots like Little Crystal Creek are flushed out during heavy rain and what is usually a quaint waterfall can turn monumental.

And don’t forget to check out our striking Wallaman Falls. Australia’s highest single drop permanent waterfall, the 268m tall Wallaman Falls is impressive in dry weather and becomes thunderous after a period of intense drenching. View the falls from above with a picnic in the day use area or, if safe to do so, hike down to the bottom. As always, please remember to be water wise and only swim or enter the water if it is safe to do so.
