With another school holiday just around the corner, now is the perfect time for families to explore the wonders of Townsville North Queensland.

This September, we've launched a special “Get Snappy” school holiday photo scavenger hunt, giving families hints on where to visit, and the chance to win a $250 Ultimate Experiences Pass to use on a holiday in Townsville North Queensland.

Venture further afield these school holidays and visit Charters Towers for a history-filled adventure the adults will enjoy just as much as the kids do. Just a 90-minute drive from Townsville, this Outback oasis is rich in more than just history - with tales of gold mining, military relics and local characters ready to share a yarn.

Here's our top list of the things you can do and see along the way on your school holiday scavenger hunt in the Outback.

Main street Charters Towers

1. Find history on every corner

You’ll be reaching for your camera at every turn to capture the many significant, ornate buildings in Charters Towers, a city with a heart of gold! The magnificent heritage buildings can be found throughout the town – there are over 60 in total. Most can be found on Mosman and Gill Streets.

We recommend visiting the Stock Exchange Arcade which was built in the 1880’s and was one of Australia’s first regional stock exchanges.

And if you’re eager to learn more about the rich history of the region (the kids can even pan for gold), the Miner’s Cottage is a mini museum that will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time and has hundreds of gold mining relics to help tick that off your ‘Get Snappy’ bingo card.

Texas Longhorns

2. Find epic Texas Longhorns

With one of the last horse draw wagon rides in the country, the Texas Longhorn Tours are for the whole family. Choose between a wagon ride tour or jump on an ATV for a safe safari the kids will love.

The Texas Longhorn Tours close in mid-October (until May the following year), so get in now before you have to wait until 2022 to see these beautiful bovines.

Photo frame atop Towers Hill

3. Find the perfect photo frame

Looking for something to frame your Charters Towers photos? Pop up to Towers Hill and you’ll find a giant picture frame with a picturesque outlook over the region. Standing two and a half metres tall, it’s just the thing for your next family photo together. Towers Hill is also a great place to catch a glimpse of friendly rock wallabies, and other macropods - sunset is the best time for this view!

Camping at Charters Towers

4. Find your ultimate camping spot

Why not make a weekend of your trip to Charters Towers and uncover your new favourite camping spot? The region has some of the best bush camping in Australia, set up on the sandy banks of the mighty Burdekin River, where there’s great 4WD tracks & fishing. If you’re lucky you might even reel in an inland barramundi.

The competition opens on the first day of school holidays, September 18 and ends October 4, 2021. To enter the “Get Snappy” competition, simply download the scavenger hunt form and share your Instagram-worthy snaps with the hashtags #townsvilleshines and #getsnappynq to win.
