Evolution: Torres Strait Masks

The Evolution: Torres Strait Masks exhibition takes visitors on a journey from time immemorial when masks were used in ceremonial rituals involving art, theatre and dance and shows how these historic artefacts have inspired new works that are constantly developing and changing. Developed by the Gab Titui Cultural Centre on Waiben (Thursday Island) this exhibition celebrates the rich and continuing tradition of mask making in Zenadh Kes (Torres Strait) and explores the longstanding importance of ceremonial masks in Torres Strait culture, and how they influence contemporary art forms. The 12 striking masks are created by contemporary Torres Strait artists – Andrew Passi, Eddie Nona, Vincent Babia, Kapua Gutchen Senior, Yessie Mosby, Alick Tipoti, Milton Savage and Seriat Young. A Ticket to Paradise?

A Greek girl, sent across the world to marry a man she’d never met; an African journalist fleeing for his life; and a stateless baby born in India to Iranian parents, are just some of the human stories that feature in A Ticket to Paradise?. This touring exhibition, from the National Archives of Australia, examines the rich diversity of Australian immigrants and the government’s ambitious plans after World War II to encourage mass migration. The exhibition reveals the human aspect of migration, with recordings of new and archival personal stories. These stories give an insight into the rich, complex and very different experiences of the migrants and refugees who have settled here. The exhibition also examines promotional campaigns which presented a Utopian view of Australia as a welcoming country full of opportunity. A national touring exhibition developed and presented by the National Archives of Australia.

All British Day

A display of British vehicles and machinery current and past, highlighting aspects of British culture and heritage and promoting a military theme. It has been hosted annually by the Jaguar Car Club of North Queensland since 1999 at The Cathedral School Mundingburra. All British Day was originally conceived to celebrate and preserve the history of the British Motor Industry—a triumph of ingenuity and engineering. Acquisition by various manufacturers over past decades led to the demise of many of the original outstanding marques. The All British Day display showcases the marques still manufactured and also offers a rare opportunity to see these unique discontinued vehicles and machines, many preserved meticulously by their enthusiastic owners. This year’s theme is again special to celebrate "All Things British" and will be also "Military" to honour the centenary of World War 1 and is appropriate for this military city. Fresh food including English delights such as bangers and mash will be in the canteen and dining room all day. British music will be broadcast all day by 4TTT. Barista coffee will be provided and a whip ice-cream van will be there. It is free admission at All British Day for the community and the displays.

The Ten Tenors - Wish You Were Here- Townsville

In the summer of 2016, The Ten Tenors were back in Melbourne Australia, running through David Bowie’s Heroes for the very first time when they learned the news of his unexpected passing. Performing that song took on a whole new meaning for them. On tour just a few months later, the group was deeply affected like many around the world by the departure of another icon, Prince. This tribute is a feel-good journey through some of the world’s greatest hits of all time, including a mix of the group’s own fan favourites: classic rock , current day chart toppers, soaring arias and other traditional favourites. With over 700 sold out shows across the US, six albums that have gone platinum and gold, appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Today Show and PBS, and performances alongside greats like Christina Aguilera, Andrea Bocelli and Keith Urban, Australia’s “vocal wonder from down under” has won over audiences worldwide with their stratospheric voices and undeniable Aussie charm. McDonalds Townsville Running Festival

In a setting that sees the sunrise over Magnetic Island, the majestic coral sea, the sunset behind the iconic granite of Castle hill, they have picture perfect prime real estate to bring you a Running Festival that stands like no other. The Townsville Marathon was started by a group of hardcore enthusiasts in 1972, who founded the “Townsville Marathon Club”. The name was a little exclusive and elitist so they toned it down somewhat to become “The Townsville Road Runners” which we all know and love today. In 1999, Townsville Road Runners aimed to raise the profile of running in the region by stepping into the unknown and hosting one of the countries first Running Festivals. The event has evolved into the premier and largest regional marathon in the state today. It is a regional event, with its own vibe, feel and unique welcoming allure, yet the certified racecourses, new race HQ at Jezzine Barracks and professionalism of the event coordinators bring a product on par, if not raising the bar, for major national events and a definite appeal for “race-chasers” and race hardened running purists alike. They are not just a run. They are an experience.

Ride for Road Safety in memory of Sue Bell and Jeff Ashby

Over 200 people ride 18 kilometres, (or the four kilometre option leaving from the Bicycle Pedlar), through the main streets of Townsville with a green wave through all lights thanks to Transport Main Roads. In a spectacular show of symbolism all wear red Operating hats supplied by Queensland Health over their helmets. The Townsville BUG runs The Ride for Road Safety annually in order to highlight the need to improve conditions for cycling in order to get more people riding as part of their everyday. The event began in 2013 as the Sue Bell Memorial ride. With blessing of her family and of Jeff Ashby's, the annual event is designed to attract attention of politicians, the media and the general community. Mrs Bell’s death and the community’s response to it contributed towards the push for the introduction of the laws to protect cyclists where motorists are now required to give at least a metre distance when passing cyclists, and a metre-and-a-half where the speed limit is higher than 60 kilometres per hour. By being part of this ride you are making the impact needed to sustain the push for safer conditions conducive to increased cycling.
