Lustre: Pearling and Australia Exhibition

From a 2,000-year-old natural pearl found in a Kimberley rock shelter to modern lustrous pearl jewellery, the exhibition Lustre: Pearling and Australia traces the fascinating heritage of pearling across the north of Australia, from Shark Bay to the Torres Strait Islands. The exhibition delves into the gritty human story of pearling, weaving together intersecting strands of Aboriginal, Asian and European histories to reveal insights into one of Australia’s oldest industries. Discover the intriguing stories behind northern Australia's unique pearling tradition. Immerse yourself in the qualities of the shell itself, its evolution and habitat, and the people who have collected and harvested these treasures from Saltwater Country. The Museum of Tropical Queensland also unravels the layers of pearling in the Torres Strait from a time before Europeans through to the golden age of luggers and beyond.

Horrible Histories - Pirates: The Exhibition

Do you have what it takes to be a pirate? Get hands-on with pirate history at this Australian National Maritime Museum travelling exhibition based on the bestselling Horrible Histories series and developed in association with Scholastic UK. Take command of a pirate ship, design and project your own pirate flag, try out different weapons from cutlasses to cannons, find your fate on the wheel of misfortune, discover the best loot to steal and splat rats in the quayside tavern. Along the way, discover why the pirate women were just as wicked as the men and learn to talk the patter of a pirate. Learn about the ships they sailed on, the punishments they suffered and the rules they lived by. The Museum of Tropical Queensland is the first venue in Queensland and only the third in Australia to host this travelling exhibition.

Dread Sovereign: Jonathan McBurnie

Dread Sovereign demonstrates a reconfiguration of the act of drawing in response to digital technologies, culminating in what the artist terms ‘metadrawing.’ Within the exhibition, questions of genre, form and medium are abandoned for an interdisciplinary approach. The internet search engine is adopted into the artist’s toolbox, integrating the countless accessible and disposable images as raw matter for the artist to fossick and sift through. Specific images are selected by McBurnie and reconfigured through studio practice, creating a new imbrication of the raw image matter.

Australia XI versus England 4-day Cricket match

November will bring international cricket to Riverway Stadium, when Cricket Australia Xl hosts the English Men’s Team in a four-day pre-Ashes series from Wednesday 15 to Saturday 18 November 2017. This red ball (day match) four-day series will run in the immediate lead up to the opening Ashes Test Match at the Gabba, which is set to take place from 23 to 27 November 2017. Tickets are on sale now and offer affordable family entertainment. You can also purchase a four-day pass and there are plenty of corporate hospitality packages on offer too! Tickets are also available at the venue on day, from Gate 2. All tickets are sold as general admission and include access to the grandstand. There is no way to reserve a seat in the grandstand. Be sun smart - make sure you bring a hat, sunscreen and water bottle!

This exhibition is curated from works which are drawn from the City of Townsville Art Collection. The focal point of the show is works with a drawn aspect to their medium, as drawings can be seen as the fundamental skill underpinning most, if not all, forms of visual art.

Australia Day Celebrations - Townsville

Townsville City Council presents a free community event and fun day in celebration of Australia Day. The morning’s schedule of events will include a fun run, free Aussie breakfast, Citizenship Ceremony, State Flag Raising Ceremony with 21-gun salute and Australian Defence Force flypast and will conclude with the Australia Day Awards Ceremony. 6am - Fun Run registrations open 6:45am - Townsville Aussie Day Fun Run start 8am - Fun Run presentations followed by free Aussie breakfast, Car display, Free Children's Amusements, Food Court 8:30am - Citizenship ceremony 9am - Live entertainment starts 10am - State Flag Raising Ceremony followed by 21-gun salute and flypast 11am - Australia Day Awards Ceremony 12pm - Event finish Please be aware this is a smoke and alcohol free event. Be sun smart and slip, slop, slap, seek shade and drink plenty of water. Sunscreens stations will be available. Hydration station will be available to refill your water bottle.

Cowboys Community Day

Gold Coast SUNS versus Geelong Cats JLT Community Series, Townsville

See AFL live in North Queensland! Gold Coast SUNS take on the Geelong Cats, Sunday March 4, 3.35pm at Riverway Stadium, Townsville for the JLT community series. All Gold Coast SUNS 2018 Members receive free general admission entry, subject to capacity. Tickets on sale Monday 5 February for Club/AFL members and Tuesday 6 February for General Public. Registration or upgrade is recommended for members to secure entry.

Gold Coast Suns versus Geelong Cats

Riverway Stadium comprises of an Australian Football League (AFL) and cricket oval, a 1,000-seat grandstand and supporting facilities, the Riverway Oval, and cricket practice nets. Queen's Baton Relay

The Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) is a Games tradition that celebrates the Commonwealth’s diversity, inspires community pride and excites people about the world-class festival of sports and culture to come. The Relay arrives in Townsville on Sunday 18 March and will move from West End to Jezzine Barracks from 2pm to 5.30pm. On Monday the Relay will begin at 7.40 am from Reid Park finishing in Cranbrook at 9.45 am. More details will be released early February 2018, please refer to the Townsville City Council website for more information.

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Basketball - Townsville Prelims

Individual athleticism and skill, combined with teamwork and tactics will have Basketball crowds cheering and chanting all over Queensland. With four captivating quarters of end-to end action each match, spectators will witness sporting entertainment like nothing else. The men’s and women’s Basketball competition will be staged at magnificent indoor arenas in Cairns, Townsville and the Gold Coast, enabling fans far and wide to experience Basketball at its best. Each competing nation will be represented by up to 12 players rotating in this on-court battle for Commonwealth supremacy. Amongst them will be some of the world’s best players ready to display their talents defending, rebounding, dribbling, dunking, shooting and scoring.

Elliot's Revenge Trail Run

The Elliot's Revenge Trail Run is the second event in the Outer Limits Trail Run Series 2018. This run will take you through the beautiful Bowling Green Bay National Park, testing your stamina on steep hills and satisfying your sense of adventure with creek crossings and challenging trails. With multiple distances to choose from, this event offers fun and challenge to the whole family. There will be prizes for the first three runners in each distance as well as prizes for first place in each age category. Dance Tropics Dance!

Dancenorth, 1RAR and Otto’s join forces once again to present… Dance Tropics Dance! One part mini festival… one part dance show… all parts fun and participatory! Featuring the hilarious MC Ian Zaro and a cracking showcase of local dancers from Movimiento, Lindyhop Swing group, Dancenorth Company, and crews from Dancenorth’s Public Program “Open Class”- Hip Hop crew, 80s Jazz crew and the gorgeous “Forever Young” over 50s dance group. A night full of party tunes by 1RAR’s kickin’ band playing songs from the 70s, 80s, 90s, naughties, and Top 40s with a huge dance floor, delicious eats by Otto’s Market food trucks, a licenced area and easy (no stress!) social dance lessons…. this is Townsville’s newest dance party under the stars! Bring your loved ones, your hot date, your squad! This is an all ages events so make sure you join us for this magical evening! No dance experience necessary and family friendly. All proceeds from this event go towards charities Dancenorth and Ronald McDonald House.

The Two Bays Trail Run

Outer Limits hosts the Two Bays Trail Run on Magnetic Island. The spectacular run takes you from Nelly Bay to the other side of the Island and finishes at the picture perfect Horseshoe Bay. The event offers a 10 kilometre and a 20 kilometre course, both are challenging and beautiful at the same time.

MagnetiCon - Townsville Pop Culture Event

Townsville's first Pop Culture Event was a roaring success, so they are set to bring everything pop culture to Townsville. There will have movie stars, cosplayers from Australia as well as cartoonist that have done work from the Simpsons to My Little Pony. Join in the cosplay competition , see Doctor Who's Tardis a Dalek and you might even see someone dressed up as the eleventh Doctor. They will have memorabilia from the Infamous Geek(Platinum Sponsor) on site as well. Dioramas from Hemble Creations from Star Trek, Star Wars, Indianna Jones and much much more. There will have vendors travelling from all over Queensland selling everything pop culture so they can't wait to see you in Tropical North Queensland during their beautiful winter 17 to 26 degrees.

Townsville Eco Fiesta

Eco Fiesta is a free event that assists the community in becoming more environmentally conscious. There will be a wide range of exhibitors and live entertainment. The event will provide you with ideas, advice and inspiration! Why not offset your carbon footprint by making a gold coin donation when you enter Eco Fiesta? All donations are distributed and presented to environmentally-focused non-profit organisations at the following year’s event. * This is a family friendly, smoke and alcohol free event. ATM onsite.

Women's Masters State Championships

Townsville will see an influx of visitors during the four-day affair, with hundreds of athletes and their supporters set to converge on the town from around the state. Masters hockey is one of the fastest growing forms of hockey in Australia and is one of Hockey Queensland's biggest tournaments. Players aged 35 and over compete in teams from their local area, with Queensland state teams selected at the end of the Championships in age groups 35+ to 65+.
