Australia Day
Townsville City Council will host Australia Day celebrations starting at 7am at Jezzine Barracks followed by the Great Australian Bites event from 12pm to 5pm at Strand Park. These events bring the community together to celebrate the multicultural society and the values, freedoms and lifestyle of the nation. The 2020 Australia Day Flag Raising Ceremony and 2020 Great Australian Bites are presented by the Townsville City Council in partnership with the Queensland Government. The Australia Day Flag Raising Ceremony and Great Australian Bites are assisted by the Australian Government through the National Australia Day Council.

Conservation Volunteers Australia Townsville - Creekwatch
Conservation Volunteers Australia believes in a healthy and sustainable environment and for everyone to be involved in managing and protecting that environment. They offer environmental volunteer opportunities in and around the Townsville region that connect people to nature and contribute to improving and protecting native habitats. All are welcome to participate in their projects to make a difference in the community, learn something new and meet other locals. Creekwatch is an opportunity to learn more about our waterways and how to keep them healthy. Come along for a day or two to conduct fish and macro-invertebrate (water bug) surveys, undertake water quality monitoring, look out for water birds and clean up the waterways. It is a fantastic way to see out of the way areas around Townsville. Creekwatch runs on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 7.30am to 1pm visiting Louisa Creek, the Townsville Town Common, Bluewater Creek, Fairfield Waters, Sach’s Creek, Stuart Creek, Rollingstone Creek and Bohle River. Transportation (from a pick up point), safety gear and morning tea are provided. In addition to their weekly projects, they run monthly beach scrub camping trips, and occasional weekend tree planting days and marine debris beach clean ups the whole family can join!

Conservation Volunteers Australia Townsville - Beach Scrub Conservation
Conservation Volunteers believes in a healthy and sustainable environment, and for everyone to be involved in managing and protecting that environment. We offer volunteer opportunities in and around the Townsville region that connect people to nature and contribute to improving and protecting native habitats. The beach scrub project aims to promote conservation of beach scrub semi-evergreen vine thickets, an endangered ecosystem that’s crucial for reducing erosion and preserving strong ecological diversity. You will be involved in weed identification and removal, photo monitoring and removal of marine debris from beaches. Join the team and explore areas up and down the coast from Townsville. You will get to see out of the way places while helping to preserve these unique habitats. Projects run most Thursdays and Fridays and depart from our office in Pallarenda at 7:00 am returning no later than 2:00 pm. If you're interested in more conservation projects, check out our website. We occasionally run family friendly weekend events like tree plantings and beach clean ups or, for the more adventurous, there are monthly camping trips to beautiful, remote locations.

Learn how to process seeds and raise seedlings for revegetation projects that preserve the local gene pool and biodiversity. Join us from 8:00 am to midday on Fridays and learn new skills while meeting new people. If you're interested in more conservation projects, check out our website. Following the news of a 2020 return earlier this week, the sizzling Hotter Than Hell line up has arrived in style, with 90s and 00s USA rock and punk royalty Everclear and Unwritten Law leading the announcement. Everclear (USA) lead the announcement. Previously laying low after a 14 year absence, Everclear last made an appearance down under celebrating their 20th anniversary tour in a string of hugely successful shows and return for the first time in three years to pump out their unique brand of singalong rock. Adding more fuel to the fire, multi-platinum punk outfit Unwritten Law (USA) heat things up across all four locations. The Southern Californian punk legends have endured with Aussie fans for their high energy live shows and distorted power riffs. A strong Australian contingent will make sure punters have 'never had so much fun' with Frenzal Rhomb, bringing their supreme on-stage banter and guitar-wielding goods along with them. Castle Hill Trail Run
The first run in the Outer Limits Trail Running Series 2020: The Castle Hill Trail Run. This event being early in the year is designed to get people into trail running and utilise Townsville's biggest icon. The race will start and finish from the West End State School and the course will cover the trails on the western side of the hill. The trails will not be closed to the public but they will not be using the popular “goat track”. The race has a three kilometre for beginners and kids, a six kilometre and a tough nine kilometre for the more experienced runners. This event will offer a great trail running experience right on your front door step. Registration opens 1 January 2020.

Elliot's Revenge Trail Run
The Elliot's Revenge Trail Run is the second event in the Outer Limits Trail Run Series 2020. This run will take you through the beautiful Bowling Green Bay National Park, testing your stamina on steep hills and satisfying your sense of adventure with creek crossings and challenging trails. With multiple distances to choose from, this event offers fun and challenge to the whole family. There will be prizes for the first three runners male and female in each distance, top 3 junior boys and girls in the short distance as well as recognition for first place in each age category. 2020 Townsville North Queensland Games
The North Queensland Games is the largest multi-sport event in regional Australia. The NQ Games is held biennial and shared between Mackay, Townsville and Cairns. The 2020 NQ Games will be staged in Townsville and surrounding regions and will be the 19th Games. There will be over 30 sports to choose from with an estimated 4000 plus participants to be involved. The 2020 Townsville NQ Games is an action packed weekend commencing with the official opening ceremony to be held on Thursday 9 April 2020. Athletes, supporters and officials participating in the games can enjoy one of the most picturesque coastal cities in northeastern Queensland, Australia. The Strand esplanade, with its pier and water park, is popular. The Reef HQ Aquarium has marine life and coral from the Great Barrier Reef, plus a sea turtle hospital. Southeast of the city, the Billabong Sanctuary wildlife park is home to koalas, wombats and crocodiles. Offshore, Magnetic Island has coral reefs and a national park full of wildlife.

Recovery of the Great Barrier Reef
Travellers from around the world come to the Great Barrier Reef, an Australian World Heritage Area, to explore its extraordinary diversity of animal and plant life. Coral reefs face a growing number of threats, from climate change and storm damage, to sediment and nutrient run-off. Join them on an Earthwatch expedition in the water around Magnetic Island to help scientists develop best-practice methods for coral recovery. On this expedition, participants can get involved through scuba or snorkel activities. You will assist researchers in making baseline measurements of environmental conditions, actively removing algae, deploying coral recruitment (settlement) tiles and assessing fish and invertebrate diversity and abundance. By joining this expedition, you’ll be at the forefront of active reef restoration science. You will assist researchers in experiments that aim to develop best practice methods for removing this macroalgae and allowing coral to regrow. You will be directly involved in filling in the gaps that will enable reef managers to make evidence-based decisions about active interventions that support the recovery of the Great Barrier Reef, and reefs all over the world. Mothers Day Colour Frenzy is coming! A Colourful day for everyone! Sunday 10 May 2020, they will be holding the Fun Walk / Run at Riverway Stadium. Their Colour Frenzy Goal is to raise over AUD5000 for Angel Paws Animal Rescue Townsville and to raise over AUD100000 for Animal Rescues across Australia in 2020. They are bringing the best of all events with their Colour Stations, Foam Station and Obstacles designed for all ages! Come have a laugh and join in the Colour Frenzy family fun! Markets and Event start at 7am at Park lands, with their fun run warm up starts at 8.15am and the walk / run at 8.30am. They will have a short 1.65 kilometre loop track marked out for everyone to follow with multiple colourful zones along the way. You can do 1, 2 or 3 laps, its your choice! Having begun in 2007, The Percivals is an open competition for artists. Call for entries are now open for the biennial Percival Portrait Painting Prize (North Queensland’s own portrait prize), together with the Percival Photographic Portrait Prize (returning for the fourth instalment since its debut in 2014) and the Percival Animal Portrait Prize. The Percivals awards provide a platform to showcase the outstanding and innovative work currently being produced by Australian artists, both experienced and emerging.

The Two Bays Trail Run 2020
Outer Limits hosts the Two Bays Trail Run on Magnetic Island. The spectacular run takes you from Nelly Bay to the other side of the Island and finishes at the picture perfect Arcadia Bay. And the best part, the finish line is at the Arcadia Hotel, only 3 steps away from the pool and the bar. The event offers a 6 kilometre, 10 kilometre and a 20 kilometre course, both are challenging and beautiful at the same time.

Recovery of the Great Barrier Reef
Travellers from around the world come to the Great Barrier Reef, an Australian World Heritage Area, to explore its extraordinary diversity of animal and plant life. Coral reefs face a growing number of threats, from climate change and storm damage, to sediment and nutrient run-off. Join them on an Earthwatch expedition in the water around Magnetic Island to help scientists develop best-practice methods for coral recovery. On this expedition, participants can get involved through scuba or snorkel activities. You will assist researchers in making baseline measurements of environmental conditions, actively removing algae, deploying coral recruitment (settlement) tiles and assessing fish and invertebrate diversity and abundance. By joining this expedition, you’ll be at the forefront of active reef restoration science. You will assist researchers in experiments that aim to develop best practice methods for removing this macroalgae and allowing coral to regrow. You will be directly involved in filling in the gaps that will enable reef managers to make evidence-based decisions about active interventions that support the recovery of the Great Barrier Reef, and reefs all over the world. All accommodation, meals, transfers and research activities included.

HALO
HALO will once again mesmerise Townsville with a new look concept in 2020. Specifically designed for Townsville, HALO will illuminate the city through a series of sound and light art installations throughout Queens Gardens and on Castle Hill and will run in conjunction with the North Australian Festival of Arts (NAFA). The 2020 sound and light festival will come to life with interactive light and sound displays, large scale art installations and an additional collaborative community element.

Pinnacles Gallery and the North Queensland Potters’ Association Inc. invite entries into the 2020 biennial North Queensland Ceramic Awards. The biennial North Queensland Ceramic Awards has long aimed to increase public exposure to a high standard of pottery from around the nation. A showcase for both well-known and emerging artists, this competition displays the diversity of ceramic art currently being produced in Australia. The City of Townsville Art Collection Award of AUD10000 continues to provide both opportunity for artists to become a part of one of the nation’s most significant ceramic collections, as well as ensuring the continued growth of this important subsection of the City of Townsville Art Collection.

In a setting that sees the sunrise over Magnetic Island, the majestic coral sea, the sunset behind the iconic granite of Castle hill, they have picture-perfect prime real estate to bring you a Running Festival that stands like no other. The Townsville Marathon was started by a group of hardcore enthusiasts in 1972, who founded the “Townsville Marathon Club”. The name was a little exclusive and elitist so they toned it down somewhat to become “The Townsville Road Runners” which we all know and love today. In 1999, Townsville Road Runners aimed to raise the profile of running in the region by stepping into the unknown and hosting one of the countries first Running Festivals. The event has evolved into the premier and largest regional marathon in the state today. It is a regional event, with its own vibe, feel and unique welcoming allure, yet the certified racecourses, new race HQ at Jezzine Barracks and professionalism of the event coordinators bring a product on par, if not raising the bar, for major national events and a definite appeal for “race-chasers” and race hardened running purists alike. They are not just a run. They are an experience.

Intersport Townsville Triathlon and Multisport Festival
Introducing the brand new Intersport Townsville Triathlon Festival Multisport Event. The TTF is entering its 18th year and is established as a significant race on the National Triathlon circuit as a World Age Group Qualifying Olympic Distance event. The Festival will host the Triathlon Queensland Club Championships North Queensland. The Townsville Triathlon Festival is the “Big Weekend” - a weekend of racing, fun and a full festival atmosphere with an array of events and activities to take part in across one massive weekend. Triathlon is one of the world’s fastest growing sports. Multisport events (Aquathon, Duathlon and Cross Tri) are set to be added to 2020 event schedule. The Festival will also offer dinner competitors entertainment options including the opening night ‘With The Stars’ dinner, the option to go to the North Queensland Cowboys home game on the Saturday night, and post event get together on the Sunday afternoon, as part of the “Big Weekend”.

Greek Fest Glendi Townsville
This year marks 21 Years of the Greek Fest Glendi Townsville Enjoy 'A Taste of the Mediterranean' with Greek Fest Festival goer's senses will come alive with traditional music and dancing displays, delectable foods and cooking demonstrations from around the Mediterranean including Greece, Italy, France and Turkey. Greek Fest Glendi is a signature cultural event in Townsville. It has provided a wonderful opportunity to embrace the Greek culture over a weekend of non-stop entertainment, wonderful cuisine, music and dance. The word ‘Glendi’ translates to festivity, revelry, merrymaking – a celebration. The festival has always been and continues to be, a free event for over 25,000 attendees. Cape Pallarenda Trail Run 2020
The signature event in the Outer Limits Trail Run Series. So close to home and taking in some of the best trails in Townsville with stunning views onto Magnetic Island. The event offers a distance for everyone, a five kilometre course for the kids or first timers, 12 kilometres for the runners who are craving more and 21 kilometres- the half marathon distance for the ones who like a good challenge. Join them for a great day out on the trails. The event is now part of the Townsville Triathlon and Multipsort Festival- Off Road Event. Registrations will be on their website.
