'9 Islands' Scenic Experience - Townsville Helicopters

Alligator Falls Track, Bowling Green Bay National Park
In the Mount Elliot section of Bowling Green Bay National Park, Alligator Creek flows through the landscape in a series of cascades, deep pools and waterfalls. The Alligator Falls track starts from the southern end of the Alligator Creek day-use area. Follow the Alligator Falls trail through the different environments of Mount Elliot. Venture through eucalypt woodlands, wade across creek crossings (there is three of them!), ascend a series of steps then scramble over boulders in the rainforest to arrive beside the creek at the base of the cascading falls. There is no access to or above the falls. Do not climb the cliff face, or dive or jump into the water. Serious injuries have occurred. Savour the creek crossings on the way to falls! With overhanging bottlebrush trees, damselflies skimming the water and butterflies fluttering above the surface, the creek crossings are a perfect place to rest and catch your breath. Carry water and wear sturdy footwear. Make sure to begin this hike with enough time to return the same way before dark—unless to plan to stay the night at Alligator Falls camping area. Remember, a pre-booked camping permit is required. This rugged, difficult trail should only be undertaken by prepared, fit and experienced hikers and should never be attempted during or after heavy rain or if heavy rain is forecast. On this track, visitors must cross the creek on three occasions. These crossings vary in depth from ankle-deep to approximately waist-deep depending on the conditions. Rain in the upper catchment can cause rapid rises in water (flash flooding), making creek crossings dangerous. Hikers can also become stranded between crossings.

At Cape Pallarenda Conservation Park, catch a stunning coastal view from the headland and visit Queensland heritage listed World War II fortifications on the Cape Pallarenda trails. Nestled in a scenic coastal location amongst open woodland and vine thickets, the historic quarantine station, established in 1915, was initially used to quarantine passengers on incoming ships. During World War II the area became a strategic defence location. Concrete structures were built on the headland in 1943 to protect Townsville and the harbour from raiding enemy ships. American and Australian armies set up camps on nearby beaches and used the Quarantine Station as a hospital. Spend time in the station's historic display centre to find out more about the quarantine days. Then set off on foot or by mountain bike to explore the shared Cape Pallarenda trails. Forts Walk, Magnetic Island National Park
The Forts Walk is Magnetic Island's most popular walking experience, showcasing many highlights of Magnetic Island National Park—koalas, stunning views and World War II relics all set in the island’s dry tropical landscape. Walk through eucalypt and acacia woodland where there is a good chance of spotting a wild koala in the stunted trees. Towards the top, impressive WWII concrete fortifications sit naturally amongst the granite boulder and hoop pine landscape. The views just get better and better. From the many vantage points see different perspectives of the island landscapes. From the very top, the views take in the surrounding ocean encompassing Bowling Green Bay National Park to the south and the Palm Islands and Hinchinbrook Island National Park to the north. The Forts Walk protects the best-preserved WWII coastal defence fortifications in Queensland and is a heritage listed site. A historical interpretive display explains the ruins and building at the site and brings life to the stories of men and women who served on Magnetic Island during the war. Geoffrey Bay Snorkel Trail
Recommended as one of the 10 best snorkelling spots in Queensland, Magnetic Island has developed two snorkel trails for visitors to enjoy, one from Nelly Bay and one from Geoffrey Bay. Before you head to the beach, pick up a swim card from one of the many retail outlets as they have useful information about the coral and fish you can see. When you get to Geoffrey Bay, wrap the swim card on your wrist, walk straight off the beach and follow the numbered white surface floats that outline the trail (and also offer a good spot to take a rest). On a calm day you will see an amazing array of fish species, especially around the Moltke wreck. For stronger swimmers, the WWII aeroplane propeller and engine block (from a CW-22B Curtiss Falcon) is another great place to explore. Do: wear stinger suits between November to April as stingers (marine jellyfish) are around. Do not: stand on coral or hold onto the sub-surface numbered floats. Water clarity is poorer during and after south-east winds and avoid very low or high tides during new or full moon phases.

Starting at the eastern end of Picnic Street in Picnic Bay, follow a track that will lead you to the saddle between Rocky Bay and Picnic Bay. Here, you will have a decent view over Rocky Bay. From here, you can even scramble down to Rocky Bay. Otherwise, the track then winds to the top of a large boulder, offering views over toward Picnic, Nelly, and Geoffrey Bays and back toward Townsville. This is Hawkings Point Lookout. One of the best places to watch sunrise and sunset on Magnetic Island.

Mount Elliot, Bowling Green Bay National Park
Rugged mountains rise abruptly from the wetlands, saltpans and mangroves of the coastal plain, south of Townsville, in the Mount Elliot section of Bowling Green Bay National Park. Mount Elliot reaches a height of 1,211 metres, jutting out of the surrounding coastal plain and dominating the landscape, and Alligator Creek descends in a series of cascades, deep pools and waterfalls. The park's wetlands are listed under the Ramsar Convention an important habitat for migratory wading birds. Enjoy a barbecue or picnic in the Alligator Creek day-use area or stay the night at Alligator Creek camping area. Take a short stroll through shady riparian forest along Alligator Creek on a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk to the creek. Look for turtle sunning themselves atop a rock in Alligator Creek or take a refreshing dip with the jungle perch in the cool clear mountain water. During and after rain, creek conditions can change and become very dangerous. Fast flowing, rapidly rising water can occur. To stay safe, do not enter the water. Mount Spec, Paluma Range National Park
Paluma Range National Park, the southern gateway for the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. Mount Spec straddles the summit and escarpment of the Paluma Range, rising 1000 metres above the Big Crystal Creek floodplain. The upland rainforests are crisscrossed by a maze of streams and cascades. Open eucalypt forests dominate the lower slopes and casuarinas fringe the clear creeks. Set up camp at Big Crystal Creek and enjoy the series of waterholes and cascades at the end of the Rockslides walking track. Take in the views from McClellands and Witts lookouts, or take a stroll on the Cloudy Creek walk. Admire the 1930s stone bridge over Little Crystal Creek. Escape the summer heat by picnicking near the creek before slipping into the one of the many cool waterholes. Take the Birthday Creek Falls walking track through rainforest to the top of the picturesque cascades on Birthday Creek.

Nelly Bay Snorkel Trail
Recommended as one of the 10 best snorkelling spots in Queensland, Magnetic Island has developed two snorkel trails for visitors to enjoy, one from Nelly Bay and one from Geoffrey Bay. Before you head to the beach, pick up a swim card from one of the many retail outlets as they have useful information about the coral and fish you can see. When you get to Nelly Bay, wrap the swim card on your wrist, walk straight off the beach and follow the numbered yellow surface floats that outline the trail (and also offer a good spot to take a rest). On a calm day you will see an amazing array of fish species, and the giant clams that can get up to a metre long planted by scientist Dr. Rick Braley who runs Aquasearch on Magnetic Island. Do: wear stinger suits between November to April as stingers (marine jellyfish) are around. Do not: stand on coral or hold onto the sub-surface numbered floats. Water clarity is poorer during and after south-east winds and avoid very low or high tides during new or full moon phases.

Radical Bay Track
Radical Bay can also be accessed via Horseshoe Bay. From the eastern end of Horseshoe Bay Beach, access to the start of the trail may be through shallow water at high tide. There is another track from Henry Lawson Street that goes behind some houses at the end of Horseshoe Bay to a bridge over the mangroves. By taking this route, you can avoid traversing the shallow water. The track then climbs through a steep gully and forest to a ridge with open eucalyptus woodland. The left branch of the track leads down to the secluded Balding Bay. Continue from the turnoff to Balding Bay and over the ridge to Radical Bay. Radical Bay will greet you with its beautiful beach surrounded by hoop-pine and boulder-strewn headlands. There are no toilets or facilities here, and note that parts of the land behind the beach are privately owned. Please observe signs.

Rollingstone Park
Pitch your tent and relax by the freshwater creek at Rollingstone Park. With a free designated tent and vehicle camping area, this is a great spot for a weekend getaway and cool down in the freshwater swimming area. Please note you must book online to secure a spot in the free camping area. Regular community markets are also held there, on the first Saturday of each month from April to September from 8 am to noon. Rollingstone also boasts a Museum, the restored Rollingstone Railway Station filled with historical mementos of the area, as well as a network of interpretive historic signage. Contact the Rollingstone Historical Society for more information on the history of the area and the markets. Other facilities include the local pub which is a community landmark and a popular stopover for day visitors to enjoy local bands and arts and crafts markets. Rollingstone also has a beach caravan resort a little further down the Highway.

Trial Introductory Flight (You Fly The Helicopter) - Townsville Helicopters
Do you want to experience the thrill of actually flying a helicopter? Trial Introductory Flights are a unique and exciting way to experience Townsville's best views and get your hands on the controls of a helicopter - all with an experienced pilot at your side to show you the ropes. Townsville Helicopters offers Trial Introductory Flights (TIFs) to the general public. The program consists of a short classroom tutorial on the effects of controls of a helicopter, followed by a flight in a helicopter where you actually fly. The helicopter is fitted with dual controls and a qualified instructor will be there to guide you through the lesson. You will experience hovering, controlled forward flight and many other manoeuvers the helicopter is capable of, whilst enjoying the views of Townsville.
