The highlights of Hinchinbrook
Just a short 1.5 hour drive north of Townsville, with a mandatory stop at The Frosty Mango, you’ll uncover a natural paradise and tranquil escape in the regional area of Hinchinbrook. For this mini road trip you’ll need nothing but a thirst for adventure and an appetite for antipasto! Here’s the highlights of Hinchinbrook you won’t want to miss!
Chasing waterfalls
TLC said ‘Don’t go chasing waterfalls’....but we disagree, especially when you are in waterfall territory. Whilst the drive to the main township of Ingham is only 1.5 hours from Townsville, make sure you allow plenty of time for detour and stop into both Paluma National Park (plenty to choose from!) and Jourama Falls. These falls are a nice teaser to your waterfall finale at Wallaman Falls, an almighty 268m single drop waterfall, the largest in Australia!
Top tip: Take the walk to the base of the falls for the best views (and Instagram moment). Take plenty of water and allow 2 hours return.
Reel it in
The Hinchinbrook region is renowned for its incredible fishing! With several charter companies providing the ultimate on the water fishing adventures, you’re just about guaranteed to reel in a whopper! If you’ve got your own boat, or you just want to stay as close to the water as possible, then we recommend Hinchinbrook Resorts Lucinda. Perhaps you might like to try something a little more adventurous? Jump on a heli-fishing tour with the crew from Hinchinbrook Adventures and discover some of the most exclusive (and best) fishing locations this little part of paradise has to offer.
Top tip: Pack a camera. Heralded as "one of the most beautiful places on earth to fish" by FishingEarth.com, you'll want to capture the spectacular scenery (when you aren't reeling in the 'big one', of course!)
Refuel in Ingham
You’ve probably worked up a decent appetite with all that nature and adventure! Ingham is home to a large Italian descent… which means just one thing - AMAZING FOOD! Pasta and antipasto are the speciality in this little Italy. Pop into one of the many delis for a picnic lunch or enjoy a walk through the towns art galleries and Mercer Lane street art before enjoying a bite at one of the specialty cafes.
Top tip: Holy cannoil - these are not to be missed! Seriously some of the best baked Italian goods on offer!
