Evolution: Torres Strait Masks

The Evolution: Torres Strait Masks exhibition takes visitors on a journey from time immemorial when masks were used in ceremonial rituals involving art, theatre and dance and shows how these historic artefacts have inspired new works that are constantly developing and changing. Developed by the Gab Titui Cultural Centre on Waiben (Thursday Island) this exhibition celebrates the rich and continuing tradition of mask making in Zenadh Kes (Torres Strait) and explores the longstanding importance of ceremonial masks in Torres Strait culture, and how they influence contemporary art forms. The 12 striking masks are created by contemporary Torres Strait artists – Andrew Passi, Eddie Nona, Vincent Babia, Kapua Gutchen Senior, Yessie Mosby, Alick Tipoti, Milton Savage and Seriat Young. A travelling exhibition from the National Museum of Australia.

All British Day

A display of British vehicles and machinery current and past, highlighting aspects of British culture and heritage and promoting a military theme. It has been hosted annually by the Jaguar Car Club of North Queensland since 1999 at The Cathedral School Mundingburra. All British Day was originally conceived to celebrate and preserve the history of the British Motor Industry—a triumph of ingenuity and engineering. Acquisition by various manufacturers over past decades led to the demise of many of the original outstanding marques. The All British Day display showcases the marques still manufactured and also offers a rare opportunity to see these unique discontinued vehicles and machines, many preserved meticulously by their enthusiastic owners. This year’s theme is again special to celebrate "All Things British" and will be also "Military" to honour the centenary of World War 1 and is appropriate for this military city. Fresh food including English delights such as bangers and mash will be in the canteen and dining room all day. British music will be broadcast all day by 4TTT. Barista coffee will be provided and a whip ice-cream van will be there. It is free admission at All British Day for the community and the displays.

Carmen presented by Melbourne City Ballet

Melbourne City Ballet’s portrayal of the classic “Carmen”, tells the story of Don Jose, a young spanish policeman working away from home. Don Jose receives a letter from his mother calling on him to return home to marry childhood friend Micaela. Don Jose’s world is changed when Carmen, a local popular gypsy girl, seduces Don Jose into freeing her from police custody after she has an altercation with her friend at a cigarette factory. Melbourne City Ballet’s Artistic Director Michael Pappalardo reimagines “Carmen” to Bizet’s famous score to bring to life an evocative opera ballet paying homage to the well known spanish inspired tragedy. Pappalardo’s “Carmen” is designed to be a loud and bold affair, pulling the audience in from the first overture. To celebrate this exciting performance, Burdekin Theatre will be offering an exclusive hour ballet workshop with Melbourne City Ballet’s professional artists. This session will not only provide Burdekin residents the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of ballet artistry but to meet some of the cast of “Carmen”. No ballet experience required! Just bring your fitness clothing and your sense of fun. This event has very limited available so make sure you don’t miss out.
