13 Ways to Make the Most of Summer

16th January 2018

Summer. The days are longer, sun is shining, breeze is blowing and we all feel like there’s nowhere to be but the beach! Our favourite season is well and truly here so it’s time to make the most of it. Here’s 13 fun things to do this summer in Townsville North Queensland.

Beaches and bays for days

If you’re looking to beat the heat, beach-hopping around Magnetic Island is a surefire way to keep cool. With 23 beaches and bays to explore, finding a stretch of sand in your own little slice of paradise is a given.

Try a Townsville brew

Visit the Townsville Brewery and get yourself a cold glass of their signature brew, Townsville Bitter. Sit back and enjoy a meal while you watch the whole beer making process, from milling to tapping and (our personal favourite) drinking!

Witness nature’s giant drop

Visit the Southern Hemisphere’s largest single drop waterfall, just 2.5 hours from Townsville! Wallaman Falls sits pretty amongst the rainforest of Girringun National Park – hike down to the base of the falls and, if the view wasn’t enough, reward yourself with a quick dip beneath the monster waterfall!

Reel in a catch

Reel in the catch of the day with Crackajack Sport Fishing in the Hinchinbrook. Summer’s the perfect time to hit the water and there’s nowhere better to drop a line in than the Hinchinbrook Channel. But don’t take our word for it – the boys from Creek to Coast can show you!

Go chasing waterfalls

Pile into the car and embark on the ultimate roadtrip chasing waterfalls! Paluma Range National Park boasts a variety of waterfalls, rockslides and swimming holes to explore. Add in the stunning views, rainforest hikes and camping on offer – you’ve got yourself an #instaworthy retreat!

Hit your holidays for six

Whether you’re having a hit or cheering from the sidelines, Charters Towers’ Goldfield Ashes will get you in the summer mood in no time. From the ridiculous outfits to inflatable pools, the shenanigans of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest amateur cricket carnival is the perfect excuse to head west and make some memories with your mates.

Taste some tropical treats

For a true taste of what Townsville North Queensland’s summer is all about, you can’t beat a visit to Frosty Mango. This award-winning café-restaurant offers some of the tastiest ice-cream in Queensland with fresh fruit grown onsite! Hot tip – the mango smoothies are sure to bring on those tropical summer vibes.

Go topless

A topless car, that is! Hire one on Magnetic Island to really feel the breeze on your face and live up those summer vibes.

Sip and swim in a rooftop pool

If the rooftop bar wasn’t enough, how about taking a dip while sipping on your mojito? Visit Rambutan on Flinders Street to enjoy delicious South American-inspired food with a cocktail (or two) by the pool – summer doesn’t get much better than that!

Friends, sun, sand and sea

Sounds like summer to us! Slather on some sunscreen and hit The Strand, Townsville’s award-winning beachfront. From the rockpool, waterpark, walking tracks and killer cafes and restaurants (not to mention the beach itself!) The Strand promises a fun day out for the whole family.

Sail the day away

Whether it’s a full day adventure tour circumnavigating Magnetic Island or a sunset sail to end your day, any time with Big Mama Sailing promises unforgettable memories for all ages. Sailing, snorkelling, paddleboarding, fun fishing – all is included on-board Big Mama!

Thrill or chill

Whether you’re looking to get your adrenaline pumping or just want to rest and recover, Magnetic Island has activities for everyone! Zoom around on jetski at Horseshoe Bay, snorkel fringing coral reef off Geoffrey Bay or spend some time at Alma Bay, voted as one of Australia’s top 10 beaches from the Surf Life Saving Queensland.

Tick the Great Barrier Reef off your bucket list

Summer is the perfect time to explore the underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef! From exploring the fringing reefs off Magnetic Island or Orpheus Island, day-trips to secluded outer reefs or diving the SS Yongala (ahem – one of the world’s best wreck dives) there’s so many ways to explore. Tip – for those not looking to get wet, head to the skies and catch a scenic helicopter tour!

No matter how you spend your summer, remember to pack your hat and sunscreen and ‘Slip, Slop, Slap’ – slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen and slap on a hat. There’s nothing worse than spending your summer recovering from a bad sunburn – ouch!
