Full Moon Down Under - Base Magnetic Island

Rachel Cairns is no stranger to the Townsville musical theatre stage, having played leading roles in many productions for the Townsville Choral Society and NQOMT including both seasons of Les Miserables, All Shook Up, Nunsense, The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins and Chess. 2017 marks Rachel's 25th year of performing musical theatre in Townsville, and the concert will feature some of her most favourite and iconic songs.

Remember Me: The lost diggers of Vignacourt

During the First World War, the small French town of Vignacourt was always behind the allied front lines. It was used as a staging point, casualty clearing station and recreation area for the troops moving to and from the battlefields on the Somme. For them, it became a home away from home. In February 2011, over 3,000 glass-plate photographic negatives were discovered in the attic of a farmhouse in Vignacourt. They are informal photographs, taken by French couple Louis and Antoinette Thuillier, of allied soldiers, many of them Australian, during their time in Vignacourt. An Australian War Memorial Travelling Exhibition.

An inspiring array of talent, passion and achievement – with many examples of triumph over adversity – is celebrated in this exhibition. Awesome Achievers: Stories from Australians of the Year has been developed specifically as a National Portrait Gallery touring exhibition to regional Australia, with major portraits drawn from the NPG collection and supplemented with works from private and institutional sources. This exhibition is supported by the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to the national collections for all Australians.

Fluorophone

Flurophone creates a kaleidoscopic sound world in which the central instruments radiate, flicker, glow and burn. Analogue and digital fluorescent lights, the naked flame, strobe lights and custom built LED discs are combined with percussion to create a program in which the music and lighting design are one and the same. Flurophone moves between noise, theatrical music and virtuostic instrumentalism, in a synesthetic display of light and sound. Featuring special commissioned works by a prominent team of leading composers.

This exhibition brings together works from some of Australia’s leading and emerging Indigenous artists made over the last five years. Featuring still photographs made using modern and historical processes, video and multimedia installation, the exhibition provides an experience of contemporary photomedia and indigeneity that is physical, embodied and thought-provoking.

In March 2017, the World Science Festival Brisbane will once again bring together the world’s best thought leaders to produce a stunning program of live and digital content that connects Asia-Pacific audiences of all ages with the concepts, challenges, discoveries and advancements that are shaping our world. The Festival’s regional program in 2017 will again provide Queensland communities the opportunity to get involved locally in the World Science Festival Brisbane. Programs designed to engage community members in stimulating and inspiring experiences, will be unique to each location, and will offer a selection of STEM-related activities such as discussions with leading scientists, workshops, hands-on activities or visual displays. The World Science Festival Brisbane regional program is presented by the Queensland Museum and the Queensland Government, in partnership with Tourism and Events Queensland with proud support from their community partner QGC

Melanoma March Townsville

Register and help to end melanoma. Did you know that more than 13,000 Australians are expected to be diagnosed with melanoma this year? And that melanoma makes up 20 per cent of all cancer cases in young Australians (15-39 years old)? Help us change this statistic and put an end to melanoma by uniting with thousands of Australians for Melanoma March. Melanoma March is a fun community event where participants unite together and walk along a short course to raise awareness and funds for life-saving research. It is an exciting day for the whole family - there will be entertainment, food, drinks and lots more. Melanoma March will be happening at Riverway, Village Boulevarde, Thuringowa. Adventurethon Magnetic Island

Paddle, mountain bike and trail run tropical Magnetic Island, North Queensland in the Adventurethon Magnetic Island. This multi-disciplined physical challenge has varying levels of difficulty, catering to the most seasoned athletes or first time fitness enthusiasts. The great thing about this multisport challenge is that newcomers can tackle the leg of the race they are comfortable with, and share the other legs as part of a team. There is even a duathlon option for the non-paddling athlete! The Magnetic Island Adventurethon is one of Queensland's toughest races, and the pinnacle in a series of five events around Australia. Completing this challenge creates a lasting memory for those with the courage to take it on. Be part of the action, either as a supporter or as a competitor. TheatreiNQ's Frankenstein

Celebrating 200 years since Mary Shelley first penned her gothic masterpiece, TheatreiNQ presents an original interpretation of this much-loved classic. With the support of the Griffin Group, Frankenstein will be presented in the historic Old Townsville West State School building on Ingham Road. This promenade, site-specific production will take audiences on a nightmarish journey through the halls and rooms of this beautiful heritage listed building. Due to the heritage nature of the building, and the use of stairs during the performance, please contact them if you have any mobility issues or concerns. ANZAC Day Townsville

Commemorate ANZAC Day with services and parades taking place throughout Townsville. Anzac Day is nationally recognised as a day to pay respect to and acknowledge those Australian and New Zealand service men and women who have lost their lives in war. Dawn Services will be held at at Anzac Park and Thuringowa Central as well as a parades in both locations in which veterans, local schools, community groups, service organisations and the armed forces participate. Townsville City Council assists the Townsville and Thuringowa RSL  Sub-branches in coordinating these Anzac Day commemorations. The Townsville ANZAC Day Commemorations include Townsville City Dawn Service, Anzac ParkThuringowa Central Dawn Service, RiverwayTownsville City Parade: Strand Park to Anzac Park, Thuringowa Central Parade: route to be advised. Constellations

So if everything we’ve ever done, and never done, has happened in alternate universes, that means there are universes in which we’ve never met. Universes where I married Prince Harry and you went to jail for tax fraud. How romantic, darling. Lovers often say fate brought them together, and fate doesn’t get much credit after that. But in Constellations, by hot young British playwright Nick Payne, every moment Roland and Marianne share is at the mercy of the infinite and unknowable universe. Lucas Stibbard (Boy Girl Wall) and Jessica Tovey (Wonderland, Home and Away) play a lovestruck beekeeper and a quantum physicist. The odds of them getting together are astronomical. But when their worlds do collide, all the possibilities of their life together – good, bad and ugly – flicker across the stage in a series of snapshots, from first date to farewell.

Arts and Culture groups such as Umbrella Studios will be coming on board and rounding up the local community to get involved in creating an artwork installation for the day. Townsville MTB Festival

Mountain Bike Australia are pleased to present the inaugural Townsville MTB Festival. This event will incorporate: - 2017 Cross-Country Marathon National Championships - Explore Townsville Adventure Ride - Castle Hill DHI Eliminator The Explore Townsville Adventure Ride will be a family-friendly event, consisting of two to three hours of riding various trails and locations throughout greater Townsville each day. The Castle-Hill DHI Eliminator will be an invitational and wild-card event for participants and is sure to draw a crowd of spectators. The XCM National Championships will as always be open to all MTBA members with categories ranging from Junior through to Masters. This truly unique event is sure to offer something for all mountain bike enthusiasts.

Shaun Tan’s The Lost Thing: From book to film

Set in a city overrun by bureaucracy, Shaun Tan’s picture book The Lost Thing tells the story of a boy who befriends a strange creature that doesn’t appear to fit in any of the available pigeon holes. Melbourne-based production company Passion Pictures Australia invited Shaun to direct an animated version of The Lost Thing. Several years later, the Oscar®-winning short film emerged. This exhibition features Shaun’s exquisite original drawings and working sketches alongside exclusive footage of the animators and sound artists demonstrating how the drawings were brought to life on screen with movement, sound effects, music and narration.

Townsville MS Swimathon

The Kokoda Memorial Pool will host the last MS Swimathon event of the season to raise vital funds to help people living with multiple sclerosis (MS). It doesn't matter if you can do 100 fast laps or doggy paddle one, everyone can join in, have fun and support people living with MS - an incurable disease which affects a person's central nervous system. Designed as a relay event, teams must have one swimmer in the water at all times throughout the entire 12 hour event period. Participants can raise donations by asking for a one off donation from friends and family or being sponsored based on the number of laps they can do. Registrations open 29 February, so get involved to help support those individuals living with MS and their families.

If you love folk music, you will love this show. If you hate folk music, you’ll love it even more. Everyone enjoys good roots, and Warmwaters stand ready to folk you right up with their songs of romance and other issues. They’ve got a lot of issues. A cross between Spinal Tap, The Kransky Sisters, and David Brent, Warmwaters leaves audiences with a smile on their face and all tingly below. Featuring Bridget Boyle and David Megarrity.

The Witches - Townsville

When one little boy unwittingly stumbles into the annual meeting of witches, he hears their nasty plan to get rid of all the children in the world – by turning them into mice! It’s going to take smarts and sneakiness to stop them and not get squished in the process. Think you can outwit a witch and outrun a mouse? Then grab a seat in the front row for The Witches, bursting onto the stage as a mind-boggling and madcap one-man show. Brave boys and girls, rat-racers and retirees are in for a wicked and wonderful time. Lucas Jervies directs this bubbling concoction, based on David Wood’s adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic, with one actor running amok in a virtuosic physical performance. Recommended for ages six and over.

The world’s most exciting, adrenaline-charged, live action-sports show, Travis Pastrana’s Nitro Circus Live, is returning to Australia to launch it’s all new, 10th anniversary, party of the decade tour.
